A Legacy of Wildness
A woodland built on a legacy of the railway industry and wartime munitions distribution.

Geneva Wood is a relatively new and largely man made urban woodland into which nature has found its way. Its origins can be found at the end of the 20th century when the land was no longer being used for industrial purposes and the railway authorities planted trees prior to handing the land over to Darlington Borough Council.
Â
Over time, the wood has evolved from a wasteland into a valuable and delightful public space. We have witnessed the gradual shift in public perception, as more and more people have discovered the joys of walking in the wood, often with their canine companions.Â
Â
Today, we continue to protect the wood. We are documenting its history and identifying the plant and animal life it supports. By this process we are hoping to increase the biodiversity of the wood and ensure that the wood remains accessible to all, hopefully promoting a connection between our community and the natural world we all share.
